Projects Water balance models and water management plans for mining organisations in the UK and Europe Modelling for dam break assessments and evaluating their impacts on the environment and downstream communities for facilities in Europe Detailed engineering designs of hydraulic structures for mine sites Operational and closure water quality modelling for mines around the globe Passive mine water treatment for abandoned historic metal mines Environmental and Social Impact Assessments for projects in Greenland and West Africa Numerical modelling to update and refine existing mine models and assess inflow from planned mine expansions Evaluating options for a leading mining organisation to reach their water reduction targets across sites globally Designing and detailed hydrogeological field programme for feasibility studies and monitoring for mine sites in Europe Mine Water Team Hydrology / Water Resource Engineering – Technical support for impacts assessment and design of water and drainage management solutions Day‑to‑day activities: developing hydrological models, water engineering solutions, and preparing technical documents under supervision Hydrogeology – Site working opportunities including domestic and international field visits, sampling, monitoring, borehole drilling supervision, aquifer testing, numerical modelling, and groundwater analysis using industry software (FEFLOW, MODFLOW, HydroBench, AQTSOLV) Geochemistry – Work on water quality and geochemical models, mine water studies, collection of environmental media samples, analysis, and input to technical reports Mine Waste Team Providing advice and developing tailings and waste management approaches that align with evolving standards Day‑to‑day activities: collaborating from concept through detailed design, engineering of geotechnical structures, 2D/3D modelling, managing project budgets and quality, preparing technical documents such as reports, drawings and cost estimates, supporting clients, representing WSP on site, engaging with networks, and assisting in business development proposals Graduate Development Programme and Future Progression The two‑year Graduate Development Programme includes core business and professional skills training, career development workshops, mentoring for professional registration and on‑the‑job experience. Deliver practice-leading consulting services to internal and external clients in the areas of conceptual model development, hydraulics, engineering design, mine water management, stormwater management, flood-lines, hydrology, water conservation and demand management, water balances and mine water management. Direct and review water resource aspects of a range of international mining and water resources projects, including environmental assessments, environmental permitting, and engineering design projects. The type of work undertaken as part of these projects could include the following: Climatic, hydrological, and hydraulic assessments, including fieldwork, data management, data analysis, and modelling; Integrated water management plans and completing conceptual design of water management infrastructure; Water balance modelling to assess water management solutions and to estimate water demand, treatment, storage, and discharge volumes; Pre-feasibility, feasibility and detailed designs of water management infrastructure (e.g. open channels, sewers, culverts, spillways, energy dissipators, holding and settling ponds, pumping systems) including capital and operating cost estimates; Dam break analyses of water and tailings dams, including developing inundation maps, delineating self-rescue zones and classifying dams in terms of risk to population, property and the environment; and Dilution and assimilative capacity assessments of surface water receivers of effluent. Flood Risk Assessments (FRA) and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) design for land development projects; Assist with developing projects and services which support climate change reporting, resilience and adaptation, including nature-based solutions; Participate in and direct multi-disciplinary project teams on local, regional and international consulting projects, so they are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to client and WSP's standards. Achieve and maintain a utilisation target to be agreed with your People Manager and reviewed annually or as determined by specific business need. Undertake project-based travel and site work, working away in the UK, Europe and internationally. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client need.
