The focus of this project is to develop feed and feed additive based solutions to reduce enteric methane emissions from pasture based dairy cows with the investigation of concurrent impacts on rumen physiology, rumen fermentation and the rumen microbiome. Associated impacts on animal performance, milk yield, quality and processability will also be determined. While a range of solutions have been developed internationally to address enteric methane emissions in housed systems, Ireland's pasture based-dairy production systems necessitate bespoke solutions. Development of solutions to reduce enteric methane emissions will play a key role in Ireland meeting its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the Agri sector by 25% by the year 20230. This project will quantify the potential of a range of feed ingredients and feed additives (novel and established) to reduce daily methane output from lactating dairy cows while also quantifying their effects on a range of animal physiological and production parameters.
