  • Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy. The Postdoctoral Research position concerns working on 2 projects, NatureScape and NBS4AQUAMISSION, both among the Biodiversa+ projects, funded in Ireland by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and co-funded by the European Union. They are shortly described below. NatureScape aims to elevate urban NBS as pivotal elements in urban decision-making processes, focusing on the critical post-implementation phase. This includes enhancing biodiversity, mitigating climate change impacts, and fostering supportive, engaged communities. NatureScape adopts a comprehensive and transformative methodology inspired by six critical factors identified by the European Environmental Agency (EEA): Governance, Knowledge, Culture and Art, Finance, Data and Information, Technology. NatureScape introduces a novel paradigm to urban ecosystems, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between nature and society to cultivate regenerative environments. This approach challenges and extends beyond conventional urban planning and co-creation methods, advocating for a holistic integration of human and ecological interests over time. Within this pan-European project, the role will be to establish a Transformation Lab in Dublin to assess the post-implementation of an innovative approach to controlling fire risks by introducing native Irish goats, in addition to demonstration of learning between local authorities. The objective is to evaluate the ecological and social implications of such interventions, highlighting the integration of traditional practices in contemporary conservation efforts. The NBS4AQUAMISSION project intends to implement nature-based solutions (NBS) to mitigate the impact of pharmaceutical pollutants on aquatic biodiversity. Through a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary approach, the project will assess the effectiveness of these solutions across multiple European demonstration sites, aiming to scale up NBS and promote sustainable water management practices. The specific role in this project to be undertaken is to: i) understand the public access to information and participation in environmental matters while considering the relevant European legal frameworks; ii) conduct research with citizens and stakeholders to bridge the science-policy interface by ultimately bringing the results out and making them helpful for local municipalities; iii) obtain insights into cultural differences in how citizens/stakeholders perceive currently polluted sites and/or the potential to use NbS to remove pollutants.
