36 Months, Fixed Term Full-Time Post Position Summary A position is available for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to work on a new project focused on the monitoring and source apportionment of ambient Particulate Matter (PM) in urban areas of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The researcher will be based in the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (CRAC), which is a key research centre within the Sustainability Institute at University College Cork. The CRAC has been a European leader in atmospheric chemistry research for over two decades and performs a wide-range of research activities which encompass laboratory, field and modelling studies related to atmospheric chemistry, air quality and climate. This research project is called Partnership for Evidence and Action on Clean Air (PEACE-Air) and is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). The PEACE-Air project aims to establish a cross-border partnership that strengthens evidence-based action on clean air through collaborative research, strategic engagement, and coordinated policy development. Researchers in CRAC (Prof. John Wenger, Dr Stig Hellebust) are contributing to the PEACE-Air objectives through research in collaboration with project partners in Northern Ireland and Ireland. The research involves deployment of a X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and other instrumentation for real-time measurements of PM chemical composition and pollutant gases. The collected data will be used to develop source apportionment models for quantifying the contribution of various sources to ambient levels of PM, e.g., exhaust and non-exhaust vehicle emissions, solid fuel burning and resuspended dust. This work will require the researcher to travel to field measurement sites in the programme area, so a full driving licence is highly desirable. Regular communication and co-operation with stakeholders (project partners in PEACE-Air) will also be required. We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated person with a high level of initiative, capable of working independently and within a team. The candidate should have fluent English and excellent communication, organization, planning and interpersonal skills. Ideally, the candidate will have experience in one or more of the following areas: - Online measurement techniques for determination of PM chemical composition, e.g., an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer for elemental analysis - Statistical techniques used in source apportionment modelling, e.g., positive matrix factorization - Working with large data volumes - Air quality monitoring and associated data analysis - Designing and/or conducting field measurement campaigns in atmospheric science Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI's. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association Project Title: Partnership for Evidence and Action on Clean Air (PEACE-Air) Post Duration: 36 Months, Full-Time Post Salary: €46,306 - €52,863 (IUA PD1 Salary Scale) For an information package including further details of the post see Informal enquiries can be made in confidence to Prof. John Wenger Telephone: Applications must be submitted online via the University College Cork vacancy portal Queries relating to the online application process should be referred to quoting the job-title and project name. 12 Months, Specific Purpose, Whole-Time Post Position Summary INFANT is now accepting applications for a Clinical Research Fellow to work on the NEOLA 2 project. The Neola device provides a safe and non-invasive method to monitor the lungs of neonates in real-time. It uses a biomedical application of GASMAS technology (Gas in Scattering Media Absorption Spectroscopy). Small and lightweight emitter and detector probes are positioned on the infant's skin. Low-power near-infrared light is sent through the chest cavity, where a small portion of the light is absorbed by water vapor and oxygen gas molecules in the lungs. The emission of light is below the limits for Laser Class 1, i.e., it is completely eye-safe and skin-safe. Neola can register small changes related to lung volume and oxygen gas concentration. The results are displayed in real-time for continuous monitoring of the infant. It is also possible to obtain and study trends from monitoring history. Neola is intended for continuous, non-invasive monitoring of the lung function in neonatal patients. It is intended to be used by neonatal health care practitioners in professional health care facilities as an adjunct in patient assessment of pulmonary conditions where changes in lung volume and oxygen gas concentration are of clinical plan to enrol up to 50 term newborn infants who have transient tachypnea of the newborn. This position will incorporate clinical exposure and also will involve interacting with the Tyndal Institute at UCC. Project Title: Neola 2 Post Duration: 12 Months Salary: €65,889 - €71,796 p.a. 23 Months, Fixed Term Full-Time Post Position Summary We are seeking a Post-Doctoral or a Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher in energy systems and climate-informed modelling to contribute primarily to the ClimEnergise project (Climate-Informed Energy Systems Planning to Support Ireland's Net Zero Ambitions). This role will lead the development and integration of climate-aware approaches into national energy and power system models, addressing the challenges posed by increasing weather and climate variability in Ireland's energy transition. The energy sector is deeply influenced by weather and climate. As Ireland transitions to renewable technologies-inherently weather-dependent-the influence of climate and weather becomes increasingly critical. At the same time, climate change and the rising frequency of extreme weather events (such as prolonged low wind speeds, cold snaps) present risks to energy security and system reliability. Integrating climate variability and extremes into long-term energy planning is therefore essential. This challenge is particularly pressing in Ireland, where limited interconnection capacity, high import dependence, and climate vulnerabilities further complicate the transition. In response, the ClimEnergise project is developing an integrated modelling framework that combines high-resolution climate data with energy system models to assess climate risks and identify cost-effective, operationally feasible mitigation strategies. The successful candidate will mainly work at the intersection of climate science, energy systems analysis, and power systems planning. The candidate will develop a novel modelling framework that translates climate signals to support cost-optimal long-term investment decisions, while also considering operational feasibility. The successful candidate will also contribute to the CAPACITY project, applying tools such as the TIMES-Ireland Model to support robust decision-making on Ireland's decarbonisation pathways. Applicants must hold a PhD in engineering, climate science, energy systems, or a related field. Demonstrated expertise in whole energy system modelling or power systems analysis is a strong asset. Proficiency in translating meteorological data into energy variables is desirable. Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI's. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association Project Title: Climate-Informed Energy Systems Planning to Support Ireland's Net Zero Ambitions (ClimEnergise) Post Duration: 23 Months, Full-Time Post Salary: Post-doc Salary: €46,305 - €52,863 p.a./Senior Post-doc Salary: €54,307 - €59,063 p.a.
