  • Senior Engineer I – Layout and Dicing Engineer (P&PD) Contract : Full Time/Fixed Term Purpose of Role Reporting to the Head of Group, this role encompasses a number of strands linked through a common starting point of mask layout and design. As an engineer in P&PD you would be responsible for mask layout and design supporting both research-driven and industry-specific design needs encompassing design file generation for our single beam systems – laser dicing, electron beam lithography and laser direct write lithography. Additionally, you would be expected to operate the laser and wafer dicer tools using the design files you have created as well as other third party files if required. This position demands an independent approach, leveraging your own expertise while fostering a collaborative learning environment for researchers, engineers, and technical staff. You will support and mentor less experienced team members and contribute to the ongoing development of more experienced personnel. For the industry-focused aspect of the role, you will address the specific needs of customers in semiconductor device fabrication. The position calls for a high level of motivation, combining technical proficiency with leadership responsibilities, and a proven track record of managing complex projects both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Key Responsibilities Mask Layout & Design Create high-precision mask layouts to support both research-driven and industry-specific applications. Generate design files compatible with single-beam systems, including electron beam lithography (EBL), laser direct-write lithography (LDWL), and laser dicing systems. Setup Process Design Kits (PDK’s) and establish and program Design Rule Checks (DRC’s) Tool Operation & Processing Independently operate advanced wafer processing tools including laser dicer and wafer dicer. Execute fabrication processes using internally developed and third-party design files to ensure high-quality device output. Technical Project Execution Manage and deliver complex projects from design through to tool operation and evaluation, ensuring alignment with research goals and commercial requirements. Apply best practices in documentation, version control, and quality assurance during design and process development. Team Collaboration & Mentorship Work closely with researchers, engineers, and technical staff to translate design requirements into fabrication-ready solutions. Support, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior team members and contribute to peer development. Industry Engagement Interface with industry partners to understand and address specific technical requirements related to semiconductor device fabrication. Adapt mask design and fabrication strategies to meet varied customer needs and timelines. Continuous Improvement Contribute to the optimisation of existing fabrication processes and the evaluation of new tools and design workflows. Participate in the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and design guidelines. Leadership & Initiative Demonstrate self-driven initiative in solving complex technical challenges with minimal supervision. Take ownership and lead projects while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Additional Duties: Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required. Essential Criteria Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field. Extensive Experience: At least 10 years of experience in the development of mask designs and layout using commercial CAD layout tools such as Mentor Graphics, Cadence, KLayout Extensive knowledge of semiconductor fabrication technology: At least 10 years of experience in translating semiconductor device process flows into optimised mask design files. Expertise in the operation of wafer dicing tools and laser dicing tools: Demonstrated ability and hands on experience in using design files to control the operation of both laser dicing and mechanical wafer dicing tools. Technical Translation Proficiency: Proven ability to bridge customer needs and practical analytical solutions, excelling in technical translation to meet diverse, and complex demands. Strong Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication abilities for effective collaboration with research groups, internal teams and external customers. Process and Documentation Proficiency: Demonstrated experience in developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), conducting Risk Assessments, and creating detailed process documentation. Desirable Criteria Familiarity with operating in a Quality Accredited environment Experience in training others in CAD design and IC layout.   • Project Manager - Research Infrastructure Access (EUPO) Contract: full time About Tyndall Tyndall National Institute is Ireland’s largest Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) and a flagship Institute of University College Cork. Specialising in both electronics and photonics, Tyndall is Ireland’s R&D hub on semiconductor technologies and works with global industry and academia to transform research into products in its core market areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-tech and the environment. Tyndall is home to a research community of over 650 people of more than 50 nationalities. Background to the Role Research Infrastructures are facilities that provide access to expertise, platform technologies and state-of-the-art tools for the research communities to conduct research and foster innovation in their fields. Tyndall operates Ireland’s major infrastructure on semiconductors and their applications. We have also coordinated a series of European-funded initiatives to offer access to Research Infrastructures in micro- and nano- electronics e.g., ASCENT (2015-2018), EnABLES (2018-2022), ASCENT+ (2020-2024), INFRACHIP (2024-2028) and are leading I-C3, Ireland’s Chips Competence Centre. This role will support the coordination and delivery of a broad portfolio of access research projects that will be delivered under the INFRACHIP programme. The successful candidate will work closely with the INFRACHIP team at Tyndall to manage internal operations, coordinate proposal submissions and researcher support, oversee short-course training delivery to INFRACHIP visitors, and liaise with partners to enable access to the overall INFRACHIP infrastructure. The role will also support the development and refinement of internal processes, tools, and communications that enable efficient operations across a growing number of projects and stakeholders. Key Duties and Responsibilities Manage and coordinate the proposal submission process and project management of activities that relate to Research Infrastructure access under the INFRACHIP programme. Act as the owner for the operational and financial management of the INFRACHIP access projects undertaken by Tyndall.     PhD - Quantum computing and AI Contract : Full Time/Fixed Term We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual with a strong background in quantum computing, AI, or a related field for a PhD project in close collaboration with Dell. Tyndall National Institute is leading European National Research Lab, at University College Cork. It is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro/nanotechnology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions to world needs. Leveraging from a range of proprietary technology platforms, world class human capital, with a €250M research infrastructure, Tyndall is delivering the next-generation technologies for in ICT, Health, Energy, Foodagri and Environment. Part of Tyndall’s ambitious ‘Deep Tech ICT’ strategy, which is a core research activity of Tyndall, we are working with world-leading industrial partners in ICT (information & communications technology). Tyndall Wireless Communications Laboratory Dublin was setup up in 2021, led by Professor Holger Claussen originally from Nokia Bell Labs, joined by Dr. Lester Ho and Dr. Senad Bulja. The lab focuses on 5 research areas: Future RF, Future Access, Future Protocols, Future AI and Future Quantum. This project falls under Future AI/Quantum. In collaboration with Dell's CTO Advanced R&D office in Ireland, we are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to contribute to a fully-funded project that aims to push the boundaries of research in quantum computing and AI, and their integration with smart systems in the future. This project is part of a larger initiative by Dell to develop and leverage quantum computer simulators on PowerEdge server clusters, and to validate and compute on real quantum computers in partnership with Tyndall National Institute. The successful candidate will work will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research in quantum computing and AI, closely with a team of industry experts from Dell Ireland and a global team of Dell experts from other locations with extensive expertise in AI, mathematics, networking, edge/quantum computing, and post-quantum cryptography. The project will provide the candidate with a comprehensive research experience, including access to state-of-the-art research facilities and equipment, as well as collaboration with a global team of industry experts. The candidate will also have the opportunity to present their research at international conferences and to publish their results in top-tier academic journals. The candidate should have excellent research skills, including the ability to design and conduct experiments, collect and analyse data, and draw meaningful conclusions. Scientific dissemination (preparation of regular internal reports, journal and conference publications, and industrial liaison) is an integral part of the position. Part of the experimental work may take place at the facilities of our industrial partner, and some local and international travel may also be expected. CONNECT is the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications and is one of several research centres located at Tyndall.
