The Role
St Patrick’s Mental Health Services seeks an ECT Staff Nurse to work in the recovery room on ECT treatment days and as part of the multi‑disciplinary team. The role involves 12 hours worked over two 6‑hour shifts – Tuesday & Friday mornings, 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
Responsibilities
Have a good knowledge of the ECT process, possible side‑effects and the nursing actions required in the event of their occurrence.
Be familiar with the ECT clinic, location of emergency equipment and be trained and competent in its use.
Ensure that all equipment is in working order prior to commencement of the list.
Be competent in BLS and ACLS.
Coordinate the arrival of patients to the ECT Department to ensure a consistent flow of patients for treatment.
On accepting the patient from the treatment room, receive a handover from the anaesthetist with regard to each patient and any specific instructions.
Attach the patient to the pulse oximeter, administer O₂, record blood pressure, pulse, respiration, observe level of consciousness, maintain airway and record all findings on the Post‑ECT Checklist.
Care for the patient in the recovery room for at least 40 minutes or as directed by the anaesthetist.
Document the patient’s level of re‑orientation following ECT at all required times in the Post‑ECT Checklist.
Alert the anaesthetist to any concerns or adverse events during recovery.
Provide a safe environment for patients and staff in the recovery area.
Supervise the care of patients in the most acute stages of recovery and be available to address concerns of the escorting nurse.
Complete all relevant documentation before the patient returns to the ward or home.
Ensure the patient is not discharged back to the ward until fully recovered.
Ensure day‑case patients are fully recovered before they leave and that discharge forms are completed and they are in the company of a responsible adult.
At the end of the list, restock the recovery room for the next day’s session.
Participate actively and collaborate with the ECT CNM II and CNM I in coordinating nursing care.
Act up for more senior nursing management staff as required.
Work with the CNM II to identify manpower resources and skills required in the ECT Department and with Nursing Administration to ensure these are available.
Promote and supervise individualized patient care for all patients in the ECT Department.
Report and address any activities jeopardising the delivery of patient care.
Foster good communication channels with staff from other departments.
Facilitate and cooperate with any inspectorate to the hospital.
Commit to identifying continuing educational/training requirements and communicate these needs to the supervisor.
Support education, assessment and supervision of student nurses in conjunction with CNM I, CNM II and Clinical Placement Coordinators.
Know and adhere to the constraints of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland code of professional conduct and scope of practice.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
Must hold current RPN/RGN/RNID registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
Be available to attend Royal College of Psychiatrists, ECT Accreditation Service or National Association of Lead Nurses in ECT training courses as required.
Professional Knowledge
Experience working within a quality assurance environment.
Experience working with all disciplines at every level in promoting service development.
Strong knowledge of ECT, indications, procedure, adverse effects and recovery procedures.
Strong knowledge of ECT policies.
Competencies & Skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Motivation.
Proven ability to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
Proven organisational skills.
Willingness to complete an ACLS course if required.

Terms and Conditions
Tenure: 0.32 WTE Part-time, Permanent contract.
Working Week: 12 hours over two 6‑hour shifts – Tuesday & Friday mornings, 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
Salary: According to the Staff Nurse 2026 salary scale, pro rata for hours worked.
Annual Leave: Pro rata based on post‑qualification experience.
Pension: Defined contribution scheme with a 4% deduction from salary. Existing pension arrangements continue for internal appointments.
Probation: Six‑month probationary period with ongoing performance review.
Health: Must be fully competent and capable of performing the duties.
Character: Must be of good character.
Retirement Age: Normal retirement age is 66 years.
