The orthodontic assessment is carried out by an orthodontist and eligibility for a public orthodontic treatment place is determined against a set of clinical guidelines. The vast majority of clients have their first interaction with the Orthodontic Unit following their 6th class dental appointment, and the results of their assessment will determine their interaction with the Orthodontic Service thereafter, but the service deals mostly with children in the 12 – 18 years age group. The service provides a whole spectrum of orthodontic related treatment to those who fit the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need eligibility criteria as adopted by the Department of Health in 2007. HSE Dental Services Provide emergency, preventive and routine dental care and Oral health promotion for target groups in the 0-16 age groups and adults with Special care needs.
