Consultant Haematologist on clinical matters relating to Blood Transfusion practice. Purpose of the Role Develop, deliver and maintain an appropriate Haemovigilance service. The fundamental philosophy guiding this position is to promote and preserve the Bon Secours Mission, Values and Ethos. The fundamental role of the Haemovigilance Officer is to ensure that patients receive their transfusion safely and in accordance with the following legislation: SI No. 360 of 2005 European Communities (Quality and Safety of Human Blood and Blood Components). SI No. 547 of 2006 European Communities (Blood and Blood Components traceability Requirements and Notification of Serious Adverse Reactions and Events). Key Duties and Responsibilities In co-operation with the Director of Nursing, Consultant Haematologist and Laboratory Manager the post holder is expected to: Implement Standard Operating Procedures developed by the Hospital Blood Transfusion Committee for the selection, administration and traceability of blood components and products. Review and audit all aspects of transfusion practice, in particular clinical transfusion practice in clinical areas. The review and audit will also include proper identification of samples in accordance with Hospital guidelines and standard operating procedures. Liaise with Blood Transfusion Laboratory staff in investigating all reports of transfusion reactions/incidents and report to Consultant Haematologist in Charge of Blood Transfusion in accordance with the Hospital's Adverse Occurrence Policy. Deliver an education programme to Nursing, Health Care Attendants, Medical Staff and new staff at induction, on all procedures relative to blood transfusion practice in line with EU Legislation. Assist with post-transfusion reaction, review and product recalls. Collection of clinical laboratory data on transfusions that can be used for formulation and updating of recommended maximum surgical blood order schedules (MSBOS) and cross match transfusion ratios. Maintain close liaison with blood transfusion laboratory staff and foster good working relationships with Nursing and Medical personnel. Maintain professional expertise by participation in educational courses, reading and research activities as appropriate. Ensure that all procedures are in conformity with the relevant legislation and Hospital policy. Provide reports on adverse occurrences relating to ward clinical activity to relevant authorities (usually Consultant Haematologist/Director of Nursing/National Haemovigilance Office) in accordance with the Hospital's Adverse Occurrence Policy. Organise and participate fully in the Hospital Blood Transfusion Committee. Actively and positively support the Hospital in its quest to gain and maintain JCI and ISO15189 Standard Accreditation and any other best practice standards or guidelines that may apply. Perform tasks and duties in a manner that ensures compliance with relevant regulations including the Blood Directive 2002/98/EC and the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EC and 98/79/EC, where applicable. Complete assigned actions, including those required in the close-out of non-conformances, change control and complaints, in a timely manner. Participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with health and safety regulations, ensuring safe working practices and a safe working environment. As the service needs of the organisation change, the above duties will be subject to change and flexibility will be required of the post holder. Additionally, the CNM II facilitates clear and effective communication within the clinical area, ensuring that professional and clinical leadership is provided to drive improvements in patient care delivery and team collaboration. Key Responsibilities Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based approach. Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership. Quality assurance within their designated area(s), as well as overseeing and maintaining high standards of clinical practice, and ensuring the efficient allocation of resources. Be responsible for the co-ordination, assessment, planning, implementation, and review of care for patients according to BSHS standards.
